ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The role of the Teacher Assistant in Nova Scotia has grown and evolved over the last number of years. There is a high demand for such individuals in our public schools who are well trained to meet the needs of students.
Developed in partnership with Nova Scotia Department of Advanced Education, this program provides both the theoretical and practical training required to support graduates in their role as a teacher assistant. Graduates will be prepared for employment in this field of work within the Nova Scotia Provincial Centres for Education.
Program Description
The Teacher Assistant program was developed to meet the training needs of the Nova Scotia’s Regional Centres for Education and is designed to provide opportunities for participants to develop the basic knowledge, skills, practical experience, and values necessary to support children and their families. Theory and practice are reinforced during practicum placements.
The practical application of learning is fundamental to the program and its participants. Students will be learning and working in the school setting throughout the program. Graduates are qualified for employment in Nova Scotia Provincial Centres for Education.
Program Duration
- 500 hours of in-class instruction
- 220 hours of work place (practicum) experience
Course of study will include the following:
- Standard First Aid
- CPR Level C
- WHIMIS
- Occupational Health & Safety
- Food Handlers
- NVCi – Non-violent Crisis Intervention
- Mental Health First Aid
Entrance Requirements
The entrance requirements for this program are Grade 12, GED, or minimum Wonderlic (14) cut score, and a clear Criminal Record/ Vulnerable Sector Check, clear Child Abuse Registry Check.
